Dr. Anderson came to San Francisco in 1993. After internship and residency training (University of California, Davis, East Bay), Dr. Anderson was employed by a medical group. In 2000, Dr. Anderson was invited to serve a five-year term as the Director of Pain Management for St. Mary's Medical Center and also at St. Mary's Spine Center. During this time, Dr. Anderson gained additional experience in treating pain related to musculoskeletal conditions and spine disorders. In 2005, Dr. Anderson was invited to join the Neuroscience Institute at California Pacific Medical Center. In preparation for the new office building (which hopefully will open by 2011), Dr. Anderson moved his practice to the future site of the Neuroscience Institute, the Davies Campus of CPMC. In 2007, Dr. Anderson closed his office and re-opened with a wholly new and highly qualified office staff with a focus on patient satisfaction.

Medical Billing Personnel:
We use an outside billing service. If you have any concerns about billing issues, however, feel free to contact us and we can submit this information on your behalf to the billing company. If you would like to contact our billing department directly, please let us know.
Medical Records Personnel:
In compliance with a national directive, we use electronic medical records. Our electronic medical record (EMR) provider is Allscripts through the Brown and Toland Medical Group. Instead of in-office staff filing charts, we have off-site staff working to keep your medical information accurate and safe. It is also for this reason that the physical office may be closed when there are no patient appointments even when the business itself is open.
Insurance Plans Accepted:
We accept many PPO insurance plans including the most common plans in California, such as Blue Cross, Blue Shield, United Healthcare, Great-West, Aetna, Cigna, Humana and Healthnet. We also accept InterPlan, USA Managed Care, FPN, and National Preferred Provider Network. We may accept other plans; please call. Because insurance plan contracts may change at any time and because any insurance company may have more than one plan, please verify our participation with your specific health plan. Sometimes we are contracted with one plan but not another. We accept the common government plans. We accept the standard Medicare plans. We also accept the Blue Cross-administered California Public Employees Retirement Plans, also known as CalPERS. We accept the new San Francisco cooperative health plan, called "Healthy San Francisco."
We are sorry. We DO NOT accept Railroad Medicare, Medicaid, Medi-Cal or county-sponsored Medicaid programs such as the Community Health Network, Blue Cross Medi-Cal or Health Plan of San Mateo.
We accept two major HMO plans available in the San Francisco area: Brown & Toland Medical Group and Beech Street insurance plans (Beech Street is owned by Concentra.).
Please note that with our contract with these HMO plans, we are contractually obligated to NOT accept Hill Physicians or On-Lok. Also, IPA organizations typically require that you see a physician within their local network. Therefore, we are unable to accept out-of-town IPAs such as Marin IPA, Sutter-Solano IPA, Mills-Peninsula Medical Group, etc. Patients are certainly welcome, but the insurance plan typically will NOT pay for visits outside of the specific medical group.
We do accept certain Workers' Compensation plans. As you may know, there are specific Medical Provider Networks. We know that we are in many MPN programs, although those MPN programs change frequently. We may accept certain workers compensation plans under special circumstances. As you know, the workers compensation carriers have specific lists of physicians for various injuries; because contracts change frequently, these lists may not be updated or accurate. Please call for additional information. For potential work comp patients, we will be pleased to perform a consultation and provide treatment recommendations. Once the insurance carrier reviews our consultation and recommendations and approves them, we then would be able to initiate a treatment plan. Currently, we are involved with the MPNs for State Fund, Sedgwick managed plans and Republic Indemnity. These programs also include the City and County of San Francisco. We also are involved with several other plans, but these may change frequently.
Insurance Plans NOT Accepted:
Although we accept most common insurance plans, there are plans that we do not accept. Sometimes we cannot accept the plans because we are not in the county (such as Marin IPA) or because we have a contract with one insurance company that forbids us from accepting another insurance plan. We do NOT accept (for reasons above):
We recognize that each patient is an individual and has unique goals. There is no cookbook formula that works for all patients, especially those with neurological conditions and those who suffer from chronic pain. For example, approximately 50% of the chronic pain patients referred to Dr. Anderson end up having a reduction in their overall medication use, while still showing improvement in their condition. Of course, some patients have an increase in medication use.
In most cases, there is an excellent physician-patient relationship, built from mutual trust. In a few cases, our philosophies may differ enough that we may not work well together. Because we all recognize that we each have different philosophies, Dr. Anderson is pleased to provide information about other practitioners and centers should a patient wish to explore alternatives.
