OFFICE NEWS:
Our office is undergoing a transformation from an older electronic
medical record system to a new electronic system. The process is,
shall we say, complex!
We are almost there! Once the transition to the new system is complete, we will ask
patients to verify their medical information. By asking patients to
review their information, not only are patients better empowered to
be a part of the medical team, any errors involved in transferring
data to the new system can be found and corrected.
We also have additional information available in the frequently
asked questions section (including refill policies and the like) and
in the calendar & contact us sections.
MEDICAL NEWS:
As part of the medical treatment and reassessment cycle, it is
important to keep up on the news that can impact a patient's
diagnosis, treatment, medications and overall quality of life.
NEWS FROM JULY 2008
- Coffee and Multiple Sclerosis
- As the research keeps showing benefits of
coffee consumption, there was a study in mice suggested that
coffee consumption of 6-8 cups per day could help halt the
progression of multiple sclerosis. This follows on the heels
of studies showing that 6-8 cups of coffee did not shorten
life, possibly helped diabetes, parkinsonism, etc. and
prevented various cancers. Of course, these have not been
proven in humans. However, it makes us feel a little better
as we feed our Starbuck's addiction!
- Fentora was NOT approved for non-cancer pain
- Many chronic pain patients were wondering
if Fentora, a fast-acting opioid medication for the rapid
relief of breakthrough pain currently FDA-approved for
cancer pain, would be FDA-approved for back pain and/or
neuropathic pain in the fall of 2008. FDA-approval for
non-cancer pain would allow the company to provide medical
and safety information to those physicians who prescribe it
for non-cancer pain. An advisory committee of the FDA,
however, has decided that it should not be FDA-approved for
non-terminal/non-cancer pain, citing concerns about the
possibility that the medication might be abused.
- Cymbalta is now
FDA approved for FIBROMYALGIA
- Cymbalta joins Lyrica as a medication
FDA-approved for fibromyalgia pain. Currently, these are the
only two medications that have FDA-approval. That means that
although many medications and other treatments are used
frequently, the makers of Cymbalta (and Lyrica) were able to
show that the benefits of their medication in fibromyalgia
were significant enough to warrant the government's "stamp
of approval" for that particular use.
- Cymbalta - maybe for chronic pain
- The company that makes Cymbalta, an
antidepressant that also was found efficacious for diabetic
neuropathy pain, may be efficacious for chronic pain. The
company has submitted a supplemental drug application to the
FDA (which means they are providing research data and
information) to see if the FDA agrees that the medication
may be advertised for the treatment of chronic pain of ANY
type.
- Magnetic stimulation for migraine headache
- Recent studies have suggested that
magnetic stimulation of the brain can reduce or abort
migraine headache. Previously, it was suspected that
magnetic stimulation could help but the magnets were huge,
immobile things. Now, a new company is testing a hand-held
device that can be set on top of the head. With a button
press, a headache can be treated. We will see how the
studies go. Yes, it seems safe.
